Coach of the Year: Ato Agustin of the Petron Blaze Boosters

Five months after leading Petron Blaze to an upset over Talk ‘N Text in the 2011 Governors’ Cup finals, Boosters coach Ato Agustin admitted that the infamous incident between him and his counterpart Chot Reyes might have taken the Tropang Texters out of their game.

“Nawala sa huwisyo yung Talk ‘N Text nung nagkaroon kami ng sagutan ni Coach Chot,” he said. After Petron was blown out in Game Three, Agustin approached Reyes at midcourt and challenged him to a fistfight. After the incident, the Boosters won three of the next four games.

Agustin contended that it wasn’t his intent to get into the head of the Tropang Texters.

“Hindi naman natin sinasadya yun. Nangyari lang talaga. Pero para sa akin, laro lang naman ako even nung player tayo sanay tayo sa ganyan kahit na pikunin tayo.”

Whether the incident had an effect or not on Talk ‘N Text is up for debate. But what isn’t up for debate is how great a coach Ato Agustin is. In his rookie season as a coach in the league, the 1992 PBA Most Valuable Player led the San Miguel franchise to two finals appearances and a championship. In less than three years as a head coach, he has won titles in the NCAA, the PBL, and the PBA.

Agustin’s deputies at Petron agree are all praises for the coach.

“Maganda sa kanya, yung winning attitude andun – from college, to PBL, now nadala niya yun sa PBA, yun yung isang bentahe nya,” said Pido Jarencio, a Petron Blaze assistant who is also a champion UAAP coach with University of Santo Tomas. “Second, yung personality niya. Yung mga players, nakuha niya yung loob. Dahil yung mga players gusto siya, maaga silang nakapag-adjust sa sistema niya, which is simple lang naman.”

“Dahil mahal si Coach Ato ng mga players niya, todo bigay  sila sa paglalaro sa kanya. Kami naman sa coaching staff, maganda yung camaraderie namin, also because of Coach Ato. Being a head coach, nakikinig siya, kaya sa tingin ko lalong gagaling siyang mag-coach.”

Gee Abanilla, another assistant, said Agustin fosters a great work atmosphere for his staff.

“Magaan yung environment where we are working. He is open to suggestions, binibigyan nya ng role ang lahat ng tao dito sa amin, from the players, coaches down to the utilities. When you see an environment like that, it makes you feel you belong to something and it makes you feel proud to be part of. It’s like working with pleasure,” said Abanilla.

“Kaming mga coaches binibigyan niya ng pagkakataon.  Kung ano yung strength ng isang coach, tina-tap niya. He’s a great listener, pero pinapakita niya sa amin yung mga kakulangan namin. In the end, he makes the decision.”

Biboy Ravanes, a longtime San Miguel assistant, praised Agustin’s openness toward his staff.

“He’s very open to suggestions. Gusto niya kaming mga assistant coaches sama-sama yung mga ideas.  He’s very approachable and hindi ka maiilang sa kanya.”

Olsen Racela, who played for Agustin in the Philippine Cup last season before retiring to join the coaching staff, praised the coach’s ability to get the best out of his players.

“Our players love to play for him. If you’re on a roll or medyo hot ka, he keeps you inside, kaya as a player, nabo-boost yung confidence mo. Nakita mo naman from the line-up naming na puro injuries, may mga nag-step up parati at nakikita ito sa laro ng mga players,” said Racela.

Ravanes added that Agustin’s mindset as a player helps him identify with the Boosters.

“Magaling siyang makisama sa mga players and naiintindihan niya talaga yung mga naglalaro, alam niya yung kiliti nitong mga ito. Para siyang one of them,” said Ravanes.

But beyond just being a players’ coach, Racela said that Agustin has a great feel for the game, which gives him an edge as a bench tactician.

“Magaling siyang magpasok ng tao. Minsan huhugot siya bigla sa bench na hindi mo akalain so magugulat yung kalaban.”

Win of the Year: Petron Blaze slams the Grand Slam bid of Talk ‘N Text

Not all basketball games are created equal. Some games are worth more than others just because there’s more at stake. PBA teams routinely sleepwalk through elimination games especially late in the season when playoff seedings are all but wrapped up. But everybody comes to play for a win-or-go-home game, and moreso when a title is on the line.

And Game Seven of the 2011 PBA Governor’s Cup title series was worth way more than any other PBA game in recent memory.

Consider the stakes. The teams were contesting the fate of Talk ‘N Text’s bid for the mythical Grand Slam, a feat done just four times before in PBA history. The difference between a historic Grand Slam and a two-titles-and-a-runnerup-finish was worlds apart, and a Talk ‘N Text loss would have turned one of the great campaigns in league history into the most bitter of disappointments.

It was also the rematch of the 2010-2011 Philippine Cup finals where Talk ‘N Text emerged with their first title that season. It would have meant the difference between a 2-0 sweep for the Texters in title series against Petron Blaze, or a 1-1 draw for the two teams that best qualify as a legitimate rivalry in today’s PBA.

Throw in the way Talk ‘N Text was rumored to have chosen to play Petron in the finals by tanking in their last game of the round-robin semis, and the
near-fistcuffs between the two coaches early in the title series and you have a game that no player would have trouble getting pumped for.

A regular PBA title, not to undercut its value, isn’t exactly the most rare of feats. When you consider that there are three of them up for grabs every single year, it kind of waters down the accomplishment just the teeniest bit.

But a game with this much at stake – this doesn’t come around too often.

Check out the other nominees for Win of the Year

And the Petron Blaze Boosters showed up for it.

Arwind Santos, fresh off losing the Most Valuable award to Jimmy Alapag, turned in an MVP-type performance. Anthony Grundy proved himself the better import over Scottie Reynolds and Mo Baker. Alex Cabagnot methodically picked the Talk ‘N Text defense apart with his playmaking.

And in the end, the Boosters took home the crown.

This was the win of the year because it was the basketball equivalent of Frodo destroying the One Ring in the fires of Mordor. Talk ‘N Text had dominated the season, won two titles and came within one game of clinching their third and becoming part of PBA history. In the end, what people will remember will be how they failed to win the Grand Slam. In one game, Petron virtually undid everything that Talk ‘N Text worked all season for.

This was the win of the year because it was the most important PBA game in years, and despite having the odds stacked against them, the Petron Blaze Boosters got the job done.

And won.

Ex-NBA star to mentor Petron's big men

MANILA, Philippines - NBA Hall of Famer Alex English will be in town for only a week to observe the Petron Blaze Boosters, particularly big men Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Carlo Sharma and Noy Baclao whom he will train for two months next year.

"We believe a two-month period of training is enough. Alex English doesn't need to be here year round," said SMC basketball operations chief Robert Non.

Petron tapped the former eight-time NBA All-Star player as skills coach following the transfer of Alton Lister to Meralco. Lister is a 17-year NBA veteran with stints with the Milwaukee Bucks, Seattle Super Sonics, Golden State Warriors, Boston Celtics and the Portland Trail Blazers.

Non said SMC president Ramon Ang wants all their three teams in Petron, Barangay Ginebra and B-Meg to have their own skills coach.

Barangay Ginebra has enlisted Joe Ward for the job while coach Tim Cone is still in search for their own skills mentor at B-Meg.

English became available after his contract with the Toronto Raptors as their assistant coach was not renewed.

He served as the director of player development and assistant coach for the Raptors from June 2004 to July 2011. He previously worked as assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers and the Atlanta Hawks.

He's got several Manila contacts, having been in the country with the group of Dennis Rodman that played a two-game series in the country a few years back.

A second-round draft pick, English rose as a major NBA star who spent the best of his 16-year career with the Denver Nuggets.

He led the Nuggets to nine consecutive playoffs, winding up the leading scorer in 55 percent of the games he played with the team.

He made the All-NBA Second Team thrice, including 1985 when he powered the Nuggets to the Western Conference finals.

He was sixth in the NBA's scoring ladder with 25,613 points by the time he retired in 1992. Through 2010, English was at No. 13.

Petron completes semis cast

ANTIPOLO -- Petron Blaze completed a two-game sweep of Meralco and set up an exciting semifinal duel with Talk n Text in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Sports Center here Wednesday night.

Even with injured ace guard Alex Cabagnot seeing action in just a few minutes, the Boosters played steady all night and bundled out the Bolts, 80-64, to earn the right to battle the Texters in a best-of-seven semis showdown starting Jan. 5.

The semifinals begin Jan. 4 with the Game One of the Rain or Shine-Powerade confrontation.

Petron and Talk n Text figures in another playoff showdown following two finals meetings last season.

Though swept by the Texters in two games in the elimination round, Agustin said he loves their chance to survive the semis.

“Dehado kami dahil kumpleto na sila samantalang pilay pa rin kami. Pero gusto ko ang laban namin,” said Agustin.

“It will be a question of will and determination. The team who wants it more gets it,” Agustin added.

Chris Lutz topscored with 22 points while Arwind Santos chipped in 18 points and Joseph Yeo added 13 points and 11 rebounds as the Boosters booted the Bolts out.

“Maganda ang game plan namin and the guys stuck with it. They were aggressive from the get-go to the finish,” said Agustin.

The Boosters pummeled the Bolts, 30-17, in the first quarter and sustained the heat to win the game convincingly.

Denok Miranda, playing extended minutes with Cabagnot hurt, delivered all-around numbers of 12 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.

Cabagnot played only for three minutes, missing one attempt and committing one turnover.

The entire Petron team, however, stepped up, leading by as many as 18 points in the lopsided contest.

Mark Cardona and Gabby Espinas fuelled a Meralco charge in the second half but the best they could do was carried the Bolts to within six at 52-58.

Clutch baskets by Santos, Miranda and Lutz reestablished a commanding spread for Petron. (SB)

The scores:

PETRON 80 - Lutz 21, Santos 18, Yeo 13, Miranda 12, Baclao 6, Reyes 6, Tugade 2, Ildefonso 2, Doruelo 0, Agustin 0, Cabagnot 0.

Cabagnot fourth quarter man as Petron takes opener against meralco

THROUGH three quarters, Alex Cabagnot was having a bad night.

When the game called for experience to step forward, Petron Blaze’s premier guard was the first to fall in line.

Cabagnot detonated a 12-0 bomb in the fourth quarter with rare back-to-back four-point plays – likely a first in the league -- and the Boosters wiggled out from a close contest to whip Meralco, 91-84, and move to within a win of advancing to the semifinal round of the PBA Philippine Cup Friday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

One of the tournament’s leading candidates for the Best Player of the Conference first completed his four-point play by knocking down a three-point shot at the top of the key and drawing a foul from Chico Lanete, and then repeated the unusual offensive brilliance against Chris Timberlake at the right corner in the Boosters’ next possession.

Cabagnot then fed Rob Reyes for a wide open jumper, and rookie Chris Lutz, playing in his first game after missing Petron’s previous five and seven of the last eight, made it a 12-point ballgame after connecting on a reverse lay-up as Petron Blaze took a 80-68 lead and never looked back.

“He always takes charge,” said Petron coach Ato Agustin of Cabagnot. “Dinadala talaga niya ‘yung team. He can defend, he can score, he can pass. He really prepared hard for this series.”

Even Bolts’ coach Ryan Gregorio was impressed.

“That’s what you call experience,” he said. “We were aware of what Cabagnot can do, but we somehow lost focus when we tied the game at 68. He was just spectacular. He played for 44 minutes and still hit the big shots.”

Cabagnot finished with 14 points – 10 coming in the fourth – flicked eight assists and pulled down seven rebounds as the Boosters moved a win away from a second straight semifinal stint and eighth in the last nine conferences.

The Boosters can wrap up the best-of-three quarter-final round series on Wednesday and set up a return bout with defending champion Talk ‘N Text, which was the first ballclub to make it to the Final Four after eliminating Barako Bull last Wednesday, 81-79.

“In a short series, a 1-0 lead is really a big advantage,” said Agustin. “We just have to make it sure that we don’t lose focus on Wednesday. I’m pretty sure that Meralco and coach Ryan (Gregorio) will come up with adjustments.”

Arwind Santos had 19 points and 12 rebounds for Petron, Lutz added 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while Rob Reyes contributed 12 points, which matched his career-high.

“Not only is Cabagnot a scoring point guard, he’s also a facilitator,” said Gregorio. “He feeds Arwind, Lutz, and Reyes.”

Sol Mercado collected 18 points, six assists and five rebounds, Gabby Espinas had 13 points and Mark Cardona contributed 12 points and five steals for the Bolts, who are eyeing to make their first semifinal round appearance in only their second season in the league.

Petron actually led by as many as 13 in the third quarter at 60-47 after Reyes had a split with 4:38
left to play.

But the Bolts fought back with their own run, chopping it down to within 60-59 after Cardona converted on a fast-break.

The two ballclubs, which split their head-to-head duel in the elimination round then battled toe-to-toe early in the fourth, before Meralco had a critical collapse in defense.

Yet the Bolts still managed to fight back after dropping behind by 12, coming to within 86-80.

Unfortunately, Cabagnot was there again to save the Boosters, driving strong to the basket for a lay-up to practically seal the outcome with just 90 seconds left to play. (ZM)

The scores:

Petron (91) - Santos 19, Lutz 18, Cabagnot 14, Reyes 12, Miranda 11, Yeo 9, Sharma 4, Ildefonso 4, Doruelo 0, Baclao 0, Tugade 0.
Meralco (84) - Mercado 18, Espinas 13, Cardona 12, Isip 10, Taulava 9, Yee 7, Borboran 6, Timberlake 2, Macapagal 2, Omolon 2, Hugnatan 2, Lanete 1.

Quarterscores: 17-22, 40-40, 63-60, 91-84.
