Eagles oust Lions, enter PCCL Finals for 5th straight year

MANILA, Philippines – UAAP’s four-peat champion Ateneo Blue Eagles rolled over an injury-plagued NCAA champion San Beda Red Lions, 76-63, today at the Arena in San Juan to arrange a titular showdown against semis tormentor San Sebastian Golden Stags in the 2011 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL).

The Eagles bucked the late arrival of their coach Norman Black 30 minutes before the game due to heavy traffic brought by rains and a slow start to overcome the Lions, who missed top gunner Garvo Lanete and Sudan Daniel due to injuries.

After San Beda zoomed to an early 7-0 start, Ateneo settled down and turned the game around in a 15-2 blast to take a six-point lead, 15-9.

The Eagles went on to lead by as many as 16 points to get another crack at the Stags, who beat them earlier this week in a stunning 70-69 reversal in the round robin semifinals.  It will marked the fifth straight appearance of the Eagles in the PCCL Finals to stamp their domination of the collegiate basketball scene with Black as their mentor.

The Eagles need to win twice against the Stags in the Finals to defend their crown, which they hoisted in the past two years.

Greg Slaughter scored 20 points and grabbed eight boards to lead the Eagles.
