MANILA, Philippines — Capadocia completed her dream run by stunning top seed Clarice Patrimonio, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3, to clinch the 30th Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open women’s crown at the PCA clay court Sunday in Paco, Manila.
The 15-year-old, second-seeded Capadocia recovered from a lethargic opening set with sharp returns in the second set to become one of the youngest winners of the event.
Her first set defeat turned out to be her biggest motivation – a catalyst – as she fired rockets that finally disarmed her highly-touted rival.
But the giant-killing run of another teen star Jurence Mendoza was put to end by five-time champion Johnny Arcilla, who scored an easy 6-1, 6-0, 6-4 victory.
Arcilla, 31, dominated his 16-year-old rival with a barrage of crisp shots to reclaim his crown after losing to Fil-German Marc Sieber last year.
“Ito yung panalo na may pinakamagandang pakiramdam,” said Arcilla, who pocketed the P100,000 top purse.
With his 6th title, Arcilla is now the winningest player in the event.
It was a revenge of sorts for Capadocia, who lost to Patrimonio in last year’s second round, 6-4, 6-1.
En route to the finals, Capadocia beat Mariel Ante, 7-5, 6-4, in the semifinals; sixth seed Marinel Rudas, 6-2, 6-0, in the quarters; Maia Balce by default in the second round; and Isabella Mendoza, 6-1, 6-0, in the first round.
While Capadocia sizzled in the second frame, Patrimonio fell into a maze of errors, thus making Capadocia’s job a lot easier.
Capadocia pocketed the P50,000 top purse – her first cash prize.
“I hope this will not my last,” said Capadocia.
