Ex-rival is Patriots' import

MANILA, Philippines — The readiness of the AirAsia Philippine Patriots to reclaim their status as the best in the region will be known starting Thursday when they compete in a preseason fund-raiser in Bangkok dubbed as “To Be No. 1 Basketball Challenge.”

To firm up their line-up, the Patriots management has tapped former rival, American Nakiea Miller, to be their import. He will team up with “balik import” Anthony Johnson in the hope leading the team back to the zenith.

Harbour Centre CEO Mikee Romero, who co-owns the team with Tony Boy Cojuangco, believes that Miller, the league's reigning Best Import, will play a significant role in their bid to regain the title they lost to the Chang Thailand Slammers early this year.

“He’s a role player and we know he can deliver at crunch time,” said team manager Erick Arejola. “Aside from being tall and mobile, one good thing about him is that he can shoot from afar.”

Miller first played for Satria Muda BritAma in the inaugural ABL season. He led the Indonesians to the finals only to be swept by the Patriots in a best-of-five series.

Last season, he suited up the Westports KL Dragons (now Westports Malaysia Dragons) but likewise fell victim to the Patriots in the semis, getting swept in a best-of-three affair.

On the other hand, Johnson hopes to make up for his early departure last season by having a longer stay with the team now coached by Glenn Capacio.
