MANILA, Philippines – Johnny Arcilla underscored his top seeding in the 30th Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open men’s singles by dominating Alexander Lazaro at the PCA indoor shell clay court in Paco, Manila.
The 5-time champion never gave the unseeded Lazaro a chance to retaliate, 6-3, 6-1.
With the victory, the 31-year-old Arcilla advanced to the semifinals of the tournament presented by Cebuana Lhuillier.
"Bawat laro ibinibigay ko na ang lahat, kailangan kong maging consistent in preparation for my next game. Hindi pwedeng maging over confident ngayon dahil lahat ng players nag-iimprove," said Arcilla, who is also a member of the Philippine national team that bagged a silver in the 2011 Southeast Asian Games.
Arcilla forged a semifinal duel against Rolando Ruel Jr. who beat his younger brother, Arvin, 7-6 (2), 6-4.
Third pick Patrick John Tierro clinched his spot in the semis after 5th seed Ronard Joven retired in the middle of their quarterfinal match.
Joven wasn’t able to continue the game due to cramps.
Tierro battles newcomer Jurence Zosimo Mendoza, who defeated No. 6 Ralph Kevin Barte, 2-6, 7-6 (10), 6-0.
The win gave Mendoza his first semi-finals appearance in the PCA Open.
In the juniors, Fritz Verdad beat Alberto Lim Jr., 3-6, 6-0, 6-1, to win the title in the boys' 18-under.
