MANILA, Philippines — Brian Viloria is returning to the ring in late-February or early-March of 2012 either in Manila or Honolulu.
Viloria made a rousing defense of his World Boxing Organization (WBO) flyweight title over the weekend, leaving mandatory Mexican challenger Giovani Segura in a sorry state after scoring an eighth-round stoppage at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
The opponent of Viloria hasn’t been selected but his manager Gary Gittelson had earlier rattled off the names of Pongsaklek Wonjongkam of Thailand, Hernan ‘Tyson’ Marquez of Mexico and Ivan Calderon of Puerto Rico.
“We will try to work something out for Brian,” said Solar Sports chief Peter Chanliong.
Fight fans should not be surprised if Viloria ends up facing a guy other than the three mentioned.
Still, aficionados are eager to see Viloria, whose parents are from Ilocos Sur, back in action following his stellar showing against the rugged Segura, who wound up with a huge lump near his right eye that needed special medical attention.
Gittelson said he would like to see Viloria as busy as possible in the coming year, something that is also in the fighter’s agenda.
Viloria, meanwhile, is attending the 33rd birthday celebration of Manny Pacquiao this Saturday in General Santos City.
Pacquiao was so impressed and ecstatic over Viloria’s victory as he was doing the color commentary on local television that he invited the Hawaii-born puncher to attend his birthday.
Viloria is sure to stand out from among the VIPs that Pacquiao will be present during the star-studded affair.
