MANILA, Philippines – Filipino-Hawaiian Brian “The Hawaiian Punch” Viloria proved that his third world title win last July was no fluke.
Viloria successfully defended his WBO flyweight title against his Mexican challenger Giovanni Seguravia via TKO in the eight round of a scheduled 12-round title fight today in the Ynares Sports Center here in Pasig City.
Viloria, who wrested the title via a unanimous decision against Julio Cesar Miranda last July, pressed the attack early on. His left hook started to hurt Segura, who is the Ring Magazine’s no.9 best pound-for-pound boxer, as a huge wealth of mass began to swell in the right side of the challenger’s face.
The Hawaiian Punch shrugged off Segura’s occasional upper cut and body punches as he countered with combinations that continually perplexed Segura.
The fight was finally halted just 29 seconds into the eight round when Viloria landed a big right that threw Segura out of balance. When the Narvacan, Ilocos Sur native went for a follow-up, the referee stopped the fight as Segura backed down and appeared to have been spent.
Viloria’s stirring triumph is his fourth straight win since losing the IBF Flyweight belt to Carlos Tamara on a 12th round stoppage in Pasay early last year that made him thought of retirement.
Viloria, 31, hiked his record to 30-3 with 17 knockouts. Segura, a former WBO/WBA lightflyweight title holder, fell to 28-1-2 with 24 stoppages.
