Ateneo, SBC in semifinal showdown

MANILA, Philippines — Many anticipated that it would be Ateneo against San Beda for the Champions League title. Instead, the country’s premier college teams will try to knock each other out Friday to earn a finals seat and the right to meet surprise finalist San Sebastian College for the title.

The game is set at 4 p.m. at Arena in San Juan City.

With identical 1-1 slates, the Blue Eagles and the Red Lions found themselves in a tight predicament, needing one more win to enter the finals.

But their problem won’t be over. The winner takes the second spot and therefore must beat San Sebastain twice to win the championship while the Stags only need to win once.

The Stags deservedly clinched the first finals berth after beating San Beda and Ateneo one after another, thus spoiling what many thought would be an Ateneo-San Beda title clash.

San Sebastian was gunning for a three-game semis sweep yesterday against CESAFI champion University of Cebu at presstime. A loss would not affect its twice-to-beat bonus because of the winner-over-other-rule in case of a tie.

Ateneo, the UAAP champions, will try to bounce back from a 70-69 loss to San Sebastian on Tuesday.

The Eagles appeared headed for a runaway win when they took a 65-53 lead but Calvin Abueva put on a brilliant one-man demolition job to pull off the upset win.

Coach Norman Black is expecting his team to rebound, especially against a San Beda team that has been depleted since the start of the semis.

The Red Lions, the NCAA champions, lost to San Sebastian, 87-72, in a game marred by a bench-clearing incident then barely defeated UC, 83-77.
