Patriots want 'To Be No. 1'

BANGKOK, Thailand — The AirAsia Philippine Patriots arrived Wednesday in this Thai capital hoping to use the preseason tournament to sharpen themselves for the third season of the AirAsia ASEAN Basketball League.

The Patriots, seeking to regain supremacy in the ABL set to open on Jan. 14, is one of six teams that will compete in the “To Be No. 1 Basketball Challenge” set to open today here.

“Hindi pa kami ganun ka-jell as a team pero gagamitin na rin namin itong tournament para makapagteam building,” said coach Glenn Capacio.

They are joined by the San Miguel Beermen, Singapore Slingers, Indonesia Warriors, Saigon Heat and Bangkok Cobras.

In this four-day fund-raising event for the victims of the city's massive flooding, all participants were split into two groups with the top teams after the single-round robin advancing to the finals on Sunday.

The squad co-owned by Harbour Centre CEO Mikee Romero and businessman Tony Boy Cojuangco will make its debut tomorrow against the Heat before facing the Cobras the following day.

San Miguel, Singapore and Indonesia (formerly Satria Muda BritAma) are in the other group.

Former Smart-Gilas Pilipinas mainstay Aldrech Ramos and imports Nakiea Miller and Anthony Johnson lead the Patriots' bid to win this short tourney.

The three will be joined by veterans Al Vergara, Reed Juntilla, Jonathan Fernandez, Erick Rodriguez, Ardy Larong, Warren Ybañez, Eddie Laure, Rob Wainwright, Marcy Arellano, Eder Saldua and Angel Raymundo.
