Powerade pulls off upset over B-MEG, forces do-or-die on Sunday

Powerade stayed alive in the race for a semifinal seat after shocking the top seed B-MEG, 97-88, in their quarterfinal match of the 2011 PBA Philippine Cup Wednesday night at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Gary David scored 32 points in the first three quarters and rookie Marcio Lassiter provided the needed support as the Tigers, No. 8 ranked in the duel, forced a knockout match on Sunday.

“It’s not yet over. What we only did tonight is get that knockout game on Sunday,” said Powerade head coach Bo Perasol. “Who knows? But we like our chances.”

David, the league’s top scorer, was unstoppable early, hitting 22 of his total output in the first half on 8-of-13 shooting to give the Tigers a 50-39 cushion going to the break.

He added 10 more in the third period though the Llamados managed to cut the double-digit lead to a single figure, 71-79, entering the fourth.

While David was on the bench, it was Lassiter’s time to torch B-MEG as the former SMART-Gilas mainstay unloaded 11 of his 24 points in that stretch to keep the match out of reach.

Powerade scored the first 8 points of the fourth period for an 87-71 spread and after the Llamados again cut the lead to 80-89, Lassiter hit a booming three-pointer and added two free throws to push the lead back to 94-82, a little over three minutes left in the game.

“We know in ourselves that we can match up with any team. But we really need the presence of Gary (David) in this series,” said Perasol who also drew 10 points and 13 rebounds from Doug Kramer.

Powerade’s win snapped the Llamados’ eight-game winning streak and spoiled the 54th birthday of head coach Tim Cone. The Llamados also lost the twice-to-beat advantage they got for finishing No. 1 in the eliminations.

It was also the first loss of B-MEG at the Big Dome after 10 games.

James Yap led the Llamados with 21 points while PJ Simon and Marc Pingris added 16 and 12 markers respectively.

Kerby Raymundo finished with 10 but only had six attempts from the field and converted half of them.
