World bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. is already lined up to fight former super bantamweight titlist Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. in San Antonio, Texas.
ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael reported that the fight will be included in the undercard of the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. bout on February 4.
“Nonito Donaire, one of the best fighters in boxing, is leaving the bantamweight division, where he was champion, for the junior featherweight division to face former titlist and top-five 122-pounder Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. for a vacant belt,” said Rafael in his ESPN blog.
Donaire and Vazquez are likely to battle for the WBO super bantamweight throne, which was vacated by Mexican champion Jorge Arce.
Rafael expects a great fight between Donaire and Vazquez.
Vazquez is the son of Puerto Rican boxing great Wilfredo Vazquez Sr. His only career loss was against Arce.
“Simply, I think this will be an action fight for as long as it lasts,” said Rafael.
